SCENE SEVEN.

CARLA ENTERS and addresses the audience.

CARLA
It’s because my son has no balls! No, seriously. I mean it. He has no balls. He’s thirteen.
If he had balls, he’d just emancipate himself. The judge said he can choose. Either his
father’s place or my place. He has to choose. Til he does, we have this crazy ass schedule.
Like every three days. And then that asshole ex of mine moves in with his girlfriend. Yeah.
Great example for a child.

Carla crosses stage.

CARLA CONTINUED
Every three days! The stupidest thing ever. And then the ex can just ask the judge and everything can change AGAIN!  And let me tell you when that child comes home, I can guarantee he doesn’t do any of his homework. And then I get to look like the bad guy because I have to stop everything and make sure that it’s all done. Very clever on my ex’s part.

Carla nods.

CARLA CONTINUED
It wasn’t always like this. Tina and I had that business going. Even the ex was involved. What he didn’t screw up anyway. It was pretty sweet.

Fool's Mate
A 10 minute play
A New York City detective and an FBI profiler believe that they have the bazaar sociopath who
persuades women to take his new and deadly diet drug.
                   -------------------------------------------------------------------

MARTINE
I can’t tell you.

BEN
Why not?

MARTINE
It’s not... It’s not for the public to see.

BEN
But I’m not just anybody.... I bet it’s those explosions. Those girls that exploded on the subways.

MARTINE
You’ve heard about that?

BEN
Who hasn’t! I live in this city. I get the media. ...It’s those fat black girls. Exploding like decomposing beached whales. Blood and bits of flesh everywhere. Poof! ... Ahhh... You can tell me some of the details about the case.

MARTINE
... It’s been difficult to control. Post explosion. The people who are nearest... Who get splattered. ...They get very sick.

BEN
Yes. I read that.

MARTINE
Perhaps from the chemicals used in the explosions. Perhaps just from the intense direct contact with bodily fluids. ... It’s not clear at this time.

BEN
The news says the same thing. It isn’t much help. They just keep saying the same thing. ... All three times. All three explosions. No new information. ...And of course Black Lives Matters gets involved...

MARTINE
It’s under investigation.

BEN
No pictures. They even take away everyone’s phone. There’s no pictures of the crime scene. ... But that last one on the PATH train ... That one girl who did that interview right after. That made the news. Her YouTube has like seven million hits. Very descriptive.

MARTINE
She was covered in blood.

BEN
She gave you an idea of what actually happened.

MARTINE
She was covered in blood and half hysterical because she was right next to the girl -

BEN
- that exploded. ...Yeah.... Very descriptive.... Are those crime scene pictures?
